It's Beginning to look a lot like Christmas . . . Ho Ho Ho

Wow, it is August 9th already! So hard to believe. Today is the last day of the Ho Ho Ho Blog Hop and I want to thank you all for hopping by! Greatest of Thanks to Carol of Just Let Me Quilt, our Cheerleader for this hop, and to Mdme. Samm, for all her inspiration and well wishing!

I had to travel to Colorado in June (and July) for work and visited a quilt shop in Golden (Golden Quilt Company). While there, I saw the cutest little Party Slippers made up and decided this was what I would make for the Blog Hop.

When I was young (I know, that was a very long time ago, but it seems like yesterday), my Aunt and Uncle  would buy all of my brothers and sisters and I (there were 6 of us) a pair of flannel pajamas for Christmas. Mom and Dad would let us open up their gift to us on Christmas Eve so that we could wear them to bed - while we dreamed of dancing sugar plums. (Trust me, we didn't ever sleep much on Christmas Eve!)

My kids like to have "new" things to wear on Christmas Eve also, but we have gotten lazy and usually end up doing toe socks or fuzzy socks.
Because we live in Phoenix, this is the PERFECT Christmas Slipper:

This is the underside with the non-slip base

The pattern I used is called "Party Slippers" by Aunties Two. When I showed my first slipper to my sister, she decided to pull rank (she is older) and let me know she could give me suggestions to make it better. By the time I made a third slipper, I knew the improvements were perfect. If I can do this, anyone can!

NOW for the GIVE-AWAY!!!
I have made up a kit for one lucky winner to make a pair of their own Christmas Slippers. It will have the Jason Yenter - In The Beginning - Winter Wonderland fabrics shown in the top pair (one fat quarter of each fabric), the slipper gripper stuff on the bottom, and the pattern. I will also include the little tips that were helpful to make these slippers great.

Just leave me a comment and tell me about your favorite Christmas Tradition. If you follow me, you may enter a second time and let me know you are a follower. On August 14th, I will randomly choose a winner so those who are behind in their hopping will have a chance to win.
Good Luck All!

Now, don't stop here, hop on over to check out what these other ladies have made!

  7. Those slippers are lovely - what a clever idea to make them for Christmas. One of our traditions is to eat Grandmas' yummy pavlova - every year!

  8. They look lovely! What a fun idea. Christmas slippers. One of our traditions is the turkey dinner that my dad makes for us. Always the same recipes, always the same problems. He starts too late.... He has to de-bone and slice the whole turkey for his dishes and usually starts at midnight on Christmas Eve. Leaving the kitchen a huge mess around 4.00 in the morning. Which, in turn, leads to us to start Christmas day grumbling and cleaning, so we can make breakfast.... Christmas wouldn't be the same without it in my house!

  9. I love your Christmas slippers, they are so cute. As I live in Sweden we eat ham and rice porridge for Christmas supper. But every Christmas Eve morning I will make some yummy rice porridge, made with fat milk. It is so yummy and good to eat in the morning, before starting the whole thing with Christmas. Our big Christmas is on Christmas Eve.

  14. My favorite tradition growing up was waking my parents on Christmas morning. My sister and I did it for years by singing, "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen." I'm not sure how melodic we were, but we enjoyed it and they did wake up! Your slippers are wonderful and I envy you living in Phoenix. I miss it so much! Yes, even the summer. All that lovely DRY heat! dezertsuz at gmail

  33. Well what a treat..I have never seen a pattern for slippers nd I really like them, very cute idea....well my tradition since I cook Christmas dinner I make a new tablecloth every year. But my DH and I mark a certain oh plate or chair or something so at the end of dinner time we ask everyone to check say under their chair and they get to take the table cloth home. But first everyone at the table has to sign the back this way they will a nice memory. I have been doing this for over 10 years now so there have been a few people that have tried to find the marked item before they sit down so not I have name place settings and this way it gets to be a fair event....just to give you an idea my brother has 3 because the last 2 he had cheated and I did not know until much later that he was pre-scanning the table...lol Have a great day.

We visited my husbands cousin every year with our little ones and he was "Santa". my children st on his lap and one year my 8 year old swore he saw Santa riding on the sled above the house, coming down to see him. We had to keep watching and all of a sudden, there was Santa in the room. My son was a "Believer".

One tradition we have in our family is to give some type of flashlight in our son's stockings. Every year, they get a flashlight! We've given tiny key chain flashlights, humongous flashlights, flashlights that you wear on your head, etc. They are all grown now, but we still give a flashlight of some type along with their gift. (I know, silly, but it became a tradition!)

  42. These little slippers are just great! How much fun to get them for Christmas! I love them. We love to go Christmas caroling. It doesn't happen as much any more, but it was one of my favorite activities growing up at Christmas time.

  43. My favorite tradition is making tamales with my mom. She always puts a black olive in each one, not sure how that started but ow it's not a homemade tamale with one of those olives in it...

  44. Brilliant slippers. My favourite tradition is we go outside on Christmas Eve and wave sparklers so Santa knows where are and where to bring our gifts. My eldest son now does this with his kids too.

  46. Such cute slippers! Even in Indiana, I have summer slippers and winter slippers. I hang a stocking for Jesus to help me keep Christmas in the proper perspective. Thanks!

  47. Our favorite family tradition is also new pj's before bedtime on Christmas Eve. My grandmother made her 3 grandchildren theirs by hand as she did not have a sewing machine. My mom made her grandchildren theirs until they graduated from high school and now I make my grandchild his Christmas pj's. I find it cute that our grandson wears his new pj's for the annual picture with the Christmas tree just before bed but when he is checked later in the evening we find his Christmas pj's under his Christmas tree in his bedroom. In the morning, he never fails to walk out of his room wearing those Christmas pj's. This has been happening for ten Christmases now so I guess he has started a new tradition!

  56. I LOVE your Christmas slippers!!!!! We don't have too many unusual Christmas traditions-- just the regulars: Lots of decorating, music, baking, music, watching Christmas movies-- all the old faves! We have often done Christmas PJs but didn't last year and I was surprised the kids were dissappointed (since they're at the age where they show little enthusiasm most of the time) I would love to adopt your Christmas slipper tradition and make some of these!!!!!

  65. Love the slippers. having said that, here on the prairies of Canada, it usually is a bit chilly for open toe slippers at Christmas, but I could ALWAYS wear a pair of socks.... Thanks so much for sharing. My kids always get to open their Xmas sock on Christmas eve. It is full of essentials, like socks, undies, candy, etc. and at least one little special present for each - My youngest is now 23 and they all still look for their sock first. lol..tradition is great.

  67. What a wonderful idea - making slippers for Christmas! My favorite tradition was also receiving pajamas for Christmas from our grandparents who lived too far away to visit for the holidays. We also opened them on Christmas Eve so that we could wear them to bed that night.

  68. The slippers are a terrific idea. My daughter asks me to do every little for her. Recently she asked me to knit her some dishcloths - they are in the works. She has asked me to make her a t-shirt quilt from her college sorority t-shirts. I'm intimated to even start, she's as much a perfectionist and picky as I am and I want it to be exactly what she wants and she lives 12 hours away. I think she just might enjoy some slippers made by mom. You are very generous with your giveaway. I have no sisters and miss sewing (even by phone) with my mom. I don't know how you manage a large family. I guess you are used to it and you just do with what you have and you certainly are blessed. My mother and father were each only children and my two brothers each married only children so we have a fairly small family. My grandparents only had one sibling and she lived with the one set of parents, so it was like we had five grandparents.
My favorite family tradition was cutting our own Christmas tree from the pine trees that my dad had planted for the purpose of controlling soil erosion. Also, we would put out cookies and milk from our own dairy for Santa.
Thank you for participating and sharing your creativity. I read about the t-shirts for your husband - what heirlooms. You are an inspiration not only with your projects but also with your life and your generosity of your giveaway and the giving you do in your career.

  72. Those slippers are so pretty and fun too. I am definitely a slipper lover. Where did you find the grippy soles. I had thought of making slippers before but didn't know where I could get that. One of our favorite traditions is to drive through the neighborhoods that put out luminaries on Christmas Eve. We put carols on the radio and drive through.

  73. One of my favorite traditions is a Christmas shopping trip to a craft fair at the local high school. It's very big and is always the first weekend of December. It's fun, I always find cool gifts and the spirit is infectious. I love your slippers. They are so feminine.

  74. My favorite Christmas Tradition is our annual Eve party. I have been hosting it for 11 years now. We have ALL the family over...about 30 of us. 77. How great! Really neat idea. No one will believe our tradition. We have hot dogs cooked in the fireplace on Christmas eve. Why? Because when the kids were little the power went out one Christmas eve and that's the best we could do. But it was fun and the roasted marshmallows got all over the fireplace screen.

  109. Those are super cute slippers.

The one tradition I always looked forward to each Christmas was for the entire family going to the local Christmas tree farm to pick out our tree and then get a new ornament from their gift shop. And of course, we had to buy the roasted/sugared nuts they sold and usually would also eat in the little cafeteria they had there as well. All three of my boys did this from the time they were born and throughout their entire childhood and now one of them who lives in the area still has continued this with his own family. This tradition was started by my own parents when I was little and at the very same tree farm, which is still owned by the same family and now being run by its 4th generation so for over 50 years I have gone to the very same farm every Christmas season.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I love them! I want to make some! One of our Christmas traditions is...on the day that we put up our tree, we open one present...which happens to be a Christmas tree ornament. We have been doing this since our daughter was born...21 years now. That means our tree has a special memory from each of those Christmas'...and little else. LOL
